The first 7 days are the most critical. Here's exactly what to do — and what to avoid — to set your puppy up for success.

Bringing a puppy home is one of the most exciting — and overwhelming — experiences a dog owner can have. The first week sets the foundation for everything that comes after. Here's exactly what to do.

Day 1: Keep It Calm

Your puppy has just left their mother, siblings, and everything familiar. Resist the urge to invite everyone over to meet the new puppy. Keep the environment calm and quiet. Let your puppy explore at their own pace.

Set Up a Safe Space Immediately

Before your puppy arrives, have a crate or designated area ready. This becomes their den — a safe, comfortable space that's entirely theirs. Put a worn t-shirt of yours inside so they can smell you.

Potty Training Starts Immediately

Take your puppy outside every 30-60 minutes, immediately after waking up, and within 15 minutes of eating. When they go outside, celebrate enthusiastically. Accidents inside should be cleaned up without drama — no scolding.

The first week is hard. You'll be sleep-deprived and second-guessing yourself. That's completely normal. Stick to the routine, be patient, and remember: this phase passes quickly.
