The BCS is a 1–9 scale used by vets to assess a dog's body fat. Score 5 is ideal: you can feel the ribs but not see them, and there's a visible waist from above. Scores 1–3 indicate underweight, 4–5 are healthy, 6–7 are overweight, and 8–9 indicate obesity. Our Ideal Weight Estimator includes descriptions for each score.
